What is Worrying?
Do you start worrying about what may or may not happen the next day as soon as your head hits the pillow at night?
It was more than 500 years ago when Michel de Montaigne made a statement that…
“My life has been filled with terrible misfortune; most of which never happened”
Like Michel de Montaigne, many of the things we worry about never happen. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t worry at all. The fact is, worry is something that we have evolved to do. We all have the ability to predict future outcomes to some degree. This allows us to think about future problems and what we can do to solve them.
Some worry is normal and helpful. Too much worry will prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep and from functioning normally throughout the day.
The Relationship between Imagination and Worrying
Worry starts with the imagination and its ability to create outcomes to events that haven’t happened yet. Humans have the innate ability to make up situations and outcomes. The problem for some people is that they begin to believe everything that their imagination tells them. If you fall into this trap, you will begin to believe that everything that happens in your life will end badly.
Getting Worry Under Control
Since worry begins with the imagination, so will getting control over the stories created in your mind. In a sense, you hypnotise yourself into believing that the negative predictions your mind makes are true.
